Cum arata Sibiul in secolul al XVII-lea?

What was Sibiu like in the 17th century?

European Cultural Capital for 2007, Sibiu, among all Transylvanian cities, has the richest patrimony of Middle Age buildings. Spared from destructive fires and wars, Hermannstadt (the German name of Sibiu), has also escaped the building fever at the beginning of the 20th century, and then at its end, when many cities tried to change their “look” which was considered “provincial”, by demolishing everything old in favor of big new buildings. Unhappily, in Sibiu were demolished the famous walls and towers which had made it famous for its invincibility. All in all, historians and architects paid attention to central squares containing the most important objectives. Architect Hermann Fabini, the coordinator of several restoration projects for the medieval buildings in Sibiu, and author of many studies regarding the old Saxon architecture, has presented in the 70’s a graphic proposal of Sibiu’s 15th century historical center. Now, after a 3 years study, the artist Radu Oltean has just finished a drawing showing the complete restoration of the stronghold and the surrounding lakes. (See illustration)
